Spatial Correlation between businesses and neighborhood

Before we talk about the spatial correlation, we will have a glimpse of the spatial distribution of different type of neighborhood or census attributes as well as the businesses or Point of Interests in Hong Kong, we will first use the map visualization tool BizMap to illustrate.

e.g. Following is the spatial distribution of the younger population in Hong Kong.

compare to following distribution of population of age > 65

Another example, following is distribution of less educated population

About the businesses, for example, following is the distribution of fast food restaurant

And we want to find out the correction between them, if any.

A Spatial Correlation Analysis tool is developed to help users explore the relationship between spatial distribution of businesses against the neighborhood demographics.

e.g. If you choose Age against Restaurant, you will see the following

For example to explore the fast food data, you will find that it is relatively higher correlated with aged population, while with very low correlation with mid age population 25-44.

On the other hand, for Bar, it is high correlated with mid age population, while lower in other age groups.

If zoom into the aged population (>65), it is strange to find Pacific Coffee has higher correlation with this age group. Also in general the following type of restaurants are higher correlated to aged population.

• Big pai dong
• Fast food
• Takeaway
• Tea restaurant

While the following type of restaurants are of lower correlation to this age group.

• Bar
• Sugar soup
• Taiwanese drink
• Steak house

For another example, when we look into Household composition vs. Shops

We found that cafe has lower correlation to neighborhood with family with unmarried children.

In another chart about Education attainment vs. shop, we observe that the cafe is more correlated to place with more educated population, and relative low correlation with population with lower education.
